I recently came across an interesting post on the Solosez listserv. Here it is:
I am trying to think of a few good ideas to generate more work for my small business practice. I have created a website that ranks very high for terms such as Massachusetts business formation and other like terms, however, outside of search engines and networking with other attorney’s I am drawing a blank on the best way to drum up new business for business formations, TM and contract review. Has anyone come across any good marketing concepts to draw in new business in this practice area?
My response to this attorney was:
If you haven’t already, start building a contact database. This could include attorneys, accountants, financial advisors, the chamber of commerce, realtors (especially those that rent/sell office space) etc. Put together a monthly newsletter and send it to all of these contacts. Drop off literature and information at the Chamber of Commerce so that they can give it to people who ask about how to start a business.
Another idea - have you thought about starting a blog and linking the feed to your website?
Also, you might want to draft a guide for your target client. Title it something like “10 pitfalls to beware of if you are starting a small business”. Use autoresponders (www.aweber.com) to send it to people that visit your website and give you their contact information. Then you can add those people to your contact database and send them your newsletter also. See my website - www.jameshartlaw.com for an example.
I’ve developed an entire website full of these ideas - www.legal-marketing-center.com. Make sure to sign up for the newsletter while you are there!
Good luck, and let me know if you have any questions - I’m always happy to talk marketing with other attorneys!
